Cairn Terms of Use

Last updated: May 2026

These terms govern your use of the Cairn iOS application (the "App"). By downloading or using Cairn, you agree to them.

1. The App

Cairn is a private journaling app for iPhone. It is provided "as is" — the App is a tool, not a service.

You are responsible for what you write inside the App. Cairn does not read, monitor, or moderate your entries — we have no technical way to. The AI features run entirely on your device.

2. Your licence

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use Cairn on Apple devices you own or control, subject to Apple's standard Licensed Application End User Licence Agreement: https://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/dev/stdeula/

You may not redistribute, resell, decompile, or reverse-engineer the App. You may export your own entries at any time via Settings → Export.

3. Premium subscriptions and lifetime purchase

Cairn is free to use. Optional Premium tiers are available:

  • Monthly auto-renewing subscription
  • Annual auto-renewing subscription, with a 7-day free trial for new subscribers
  • Lifetime one-time purchase

Auto-renewal: Subscriptions automatically renew at the end of each period at the then-current price unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the renewal date. Renewal is charged to the Apple ID associated with your purchase.

Cancellation: You can cancel at any time from your iPhone's Settings → [Your Apple ID] → Subscriptions. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period — you keep Premium access until then. We do not have the ability to cancel on your behalf; Apple manages all subscription state.

Free trial conversion: If you start a 7-day free trial and don't cancel before the trial ends, you will be charged for the first paid period automatically.

Refunds: All purchases are made through Apple. Refunds are handled by Apple under their refund policy: https://support.apple.com/HT204084 — we do not have the ability to issue refunds directly.

Lifetime: A lifetime purchase grants Premium features for as long as Cairn remains available on the App Store, including future updates. Lifetime is a one-time purchase and does not auto-renew.

4. Family Sharing

The lifetime purchase is currently configured as non-family-shareable. Subscriptions follow Apple's standard Family Sharing rules — see Apple's documentation for current behaviour.

5. iCloud sync

If you enable iCloud sync (a Premium feature), your journal is stored in your private Apple iCloud container. We have no access to that data. iCloud availability and behaviour are governed by Apple's iCloud Terms: https://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/icloud/

6. Intellectual property

You own everything you write in Cairn. We claim no rights to your entries.

The Cairn name, logo, and design are owned by the developer. The App's source code remains the developer's property.

7. Disclaimers

Cairn is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind. To the maximum extent permitted by law, the developer disclaims all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose.

Cairn is a journaling tool. It is not a medical device, not a therapy app, and not a substitute for professional mental health care. If you are in distress, contact a qualified mental health professional or a crisis service (Samaritans Ireland: 116 123).

8. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, the developer is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of Cairn, including but not limited to loss of data, loss of profits, or device damage.

Our total liability to you for any claim arising from these Terms or your use of Cairn is limited to the amount you have paid us in the twelve months preceding the claim.

9. Termination

You may stop using Cairn at any time by deleting the App. Deleting the App from your iPhone removes all your journal entries from that device.

We may suspend access to specific accounts if a user is found to be abusing the App (for example, attempting to defraud Apple's purchase system), but because we collect no account data, in practice this rarely applies.

10. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of Ireland. Any dispute will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Ireland.

11. Changes

We may update these Terms occasionally. The "Last updated" date at the top will change. Material changes will be surfaced in the App via an update notice. Continued use after a change indicates acceptance.
